How to Save 25 Hours on 50 Job Applications (Without Losing Opportunities)

Have you ever spent an entire evening tailoring your CV, uploading it on a job portal, and then waiting for weeks without hearing back? Multiply that by dozens of applications, and suddenly the job search feels like a full-time job with no paycheck.

The numbers explain why: between 7598% of CVs uploaded to Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) never reach a recruiter. That means, out of 100 applications, only 2 to 25 are actually reviewed by a human. Even highly qualified professionals often get filtered out before they have a chance to demonstrate their value.

And then, there’s the time factor. Crafting one tailored CV can take close to an hour. Apply to 50 jobs, and you have spent the equivalent of more than an entire working week, often with little to show for it if your strategy isn’t effective.

At Career Angels, after working with over 12,000 managers and executives, we consistently see 4 main reasons why candidates waste time and miss out on opportunities:

  • relying on inefficient filters when searching for offers,
  • treating all application channels equally,
  • sending poorly adjusted CVs with missing keywords or formatting issues,
  • spending too much time tailoring each application.

The good news: all of these challenges are fixable.

How Can Smarter Filters Lead to Better Job Offers?

One common reason why candidates miss opportunities is relying on filters that are too strict. Many job postings contain mistakes in their settings such as wrong seniority level, incorrect location or unclear work arrangement (hybrid/onsite/remote). Overly narrow filters hide relevant roles from your search results.

Tip: Start with broader filters, then narrow your results by excluding irrelevant terms (for example, by using “NOT”). This way, you will not miss out on relevant roles just because of a recruiter’s misconfigured posting.

Which Application Channel Should You Prioritize?

Not all job postings are created equal. Around 70% of managerial positions are posted through ATS or platforms like LinkedIn. As to the latter, there are 3 ways to apply:

1. Via Email: Send a concise, structured message with your CV prepared for humans. Refer directly to the keywords and skills from the job ad and provide clear evidence of your experience.

2. Via Easy Apply: Don’t underestimate how the algorithm ranks candidates. Recruiters often see ranked lists of candidates based on how well their profiles match the job description. Analyze 10 job ads, extract the most common skills and keywords, and then update your LinkedIn profile accordingly.

3. Via external page / ATS: Keep the formatting simple. Use one column only; avoid headers and footers, text boxes, and hyperlinks. Stick to standard fonts. Tools such as Jobscan can help you test your CV against job descriptions to check whether the right keywords are included.

How Can You Reduce CV Tailoring Time?

A frequent mistake is starting from scratch every time. Instead, prepare one or two base CVs aligned with your target roles. When you find an opportunity, make small adjustments by adding the right keywords and updating a few lines. This should take 15-20 minutes instead of a full hour.

This method not only saves time but also ensures consistency across your applications.

Should You Reach Out Directly to a Potential Employer?

If a role is especially important, do not rely only on job portals. Try contacting your potential future employer directly by email. A short and well-written message can open doors much faster than any formal process.

What Results Can You Expect?

By applying those strategies, candidates typically:

  • find more (and better) job offers,
  • spend 50% less time on tailoring their CVs,
  • increase the number of interview invitations.

In practice, this means saving about 25 hours on 50 applications and moving from hearing silence to having real conversations with employers.
