While sending your CV to the decision maker (or to the headhunter), you will stumble over some obstacles. Firstly: you want them to open your e-mail. Secondly: once they have read it, you want them to open your CV instead of hitting the “delete” button. Thirdly: you want them to read the whole document after they have read your profile summary. Fourthly: you want to be invited to an interview. The third and the fourth obstacle can be overcome by an exceptionally good CV. The first and the second by a well-written motivation letter… that was some time ago… Read more

Speculative Introduction
If you could work where ever you wanted, where would that be? What are your TOP 20 companies?
Why not contact the decision makers there directly? Sylwia Rzemieniewska, Managing Director, Target Executive Search, warns, “An executive that sends his CV to a lot of companies themselves will not be well perceived. They will definitely make a better impression when going via a headhunter. Read more
CFO: Changing industries
A Chief Financial Officer, who had been looking for a new position for 9 months passively and for the most recent 3 months actively without major successes, contacted us in February 2012. The outplacement support from his former employer had not been helpful either. We asked him to prepare a list of potential employers of his first choice. We call that the “TOP 20”. STAR Exercise sheet
This file contains a description of the STAR technique that is very useful during interviews. It helps structure every project into: situation, task (goal), action and results. Important: it’s not about memorizing your answers! It’s about understanding and practicing the structure!

Do you want to know which mistakes you should avoid in the virtual world? How should you behave to make a positive impression? You can find such recommendations in the new pdf added to the Free Material called “How (not) to behave in the virtual world”. Happy reading!
Project Portfolio
The project portfolio includes additional relevant information that did not fit into the CV. We recommend describing on average three selected projects of either high complexity or spectacular successes. A well-structured add-on furthermore sets you aside as a motivated, well-prepared candidate, communicates your work style and train of thought. It shows your reasoning abilities, analytical skills and business acumen. The formatting should be coherent with your CV. Read more

Tips from recruiters & decision makers
We asked Executive Search Consultants & CEOs, “What should executives especially pay attention to during the job interview?” Most of the answers we received were very similar. In order to demonstrate the importance of the theoretically obvious answers, we have opted for enlisting almost all of them. In no particular order:
“The relationship between the candidate and the headhunter is one of mutual responsibility. Read more
CV preparation tips
Preparing your CV avoid:
– writing in the first person. It makes the whole text more difficult to read. We know that there are career coaches that claim otherwise. We’ve verified with HR Directors and CEOs.
– enlisting your character traits or soft skills like “I am a creative person.” You are an executive and not a student! The entirety of the CV should perspire with your personality, which agreeably is Read more
