Job Hunting Report – 2021 KPIs summarized for candidates

Since 2012 we’ve been meticulously collecting data on what works and what doesn’t on the job market from an experienced candidate’s perspective – we are the only player in Europe that does that. Interpreting stats is ever more important in a world that continues to be VUCA – why? Without proper research, most executives meander in frustration from interview to interview, if they were able to land one in the first place. Our KPI-driven approach allows us to effectively help experienced candidates navigate the labyrinth that is the job market.

2021 confirmed our suspicion of being “more of 2020” in terms of a being a difficult and unpredictable job market. On the one hand, the majority of European countries decreased their unemployment rates, but only a handful have seen a return to pre-COVID levels when it comes to demand for candidates that are recruited via platforms like LinkedIn.

“I should change my job, but I’m not doing anything about it.”, “I feel like banging my head against a brick wall, I’ve stopped developing myself”, “I need to rebrand”, “I’m stuck and have no idea what to do next”… sounds familiar? Everyone will be facing an important decision sooner or later. It comes along with resistance, fear of change or getting outside of my comfort zone. These are our clients’ challenges, which every career consultant deals with regularly. In addition, there are changing trends in the labour market, automation, the influence of technology, or – like now – a pandemic, which has changed the behaviour of the market’s players.

To be able to advise successfully, support and motivate clients in making life-changing decisions, knowledge about psychology, coaching and working with resistance to change is necessary.

To be able to advise others in the field of developing and changing their career paths, you need to understand how people make career decisions. And you should start with yourself.

We asked our students, “When you were kids, who did you want to be when you grow up?” Their answers: translator, teacher, writer, psychologist, singer, actor, tailor, dancer, “somebody who works with computers”… 75% of them “ended up” in either soft or “hard” HR in roles / positions, like coach, trainer, recruiter, HR Manager, HR BP or HR Director. The others are involved in IT, Project Management or operations. To sum up: it is a very varied, interesting and mature group. The average work experience is 18 years – beginning from 9, through 27, up to 30 years of experience.
